Powerlifting is a strength sport that is based on capacity to lift maximal weight. It is based on lifting weight in three different methods of lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. This sport is performed in a variety of competitions, and it is also used as a method of strength training. At Brazos Valley Barbell, we coach in raw lifting, which generally includes knee sleeves and a belt. Those who choose equipped lifting are also more than welcome to join.
Powerlifting requires maximizing muscle mass and strength through progressive overload, and training in this sport is a fantastic way of building your body. It takes a lot of work and effort to excel in this sport, but it can be extremely satisfying to reach your personal goals and exceed your weightlifting potential. Do not expect to hit massive lifts on your first day, but with proper training and guidance, you would be surprised at what your body can achieve.
Olympic weightlifting level sport in which an athlete attempts to achieve a lift of maximum weight with a bar loaded down with weight plates. There are two types of lifts in Olympic weightlifting known as the ‘snatch’ and the ‘clean and jerk.’ During a competition, an individual gets three attempts to achieve both types of lifts successfully. Failure to achieve a successful lift of both the ‘snatch’ and the ‘clean and jerk’ results in an incomplete entry. Unlike other strength sports, which challenge the physical limits of human strength, weightlifting is intended to test the limits of explosive strength. Weightlifting lifts are performed faster and with a wider range of movement compared to other strength sports as the lifts are executed in one continuous motion.
Weightlifting emphasizes on form just as much as it relies on strength, which makes it a great training sport for developing technique. It takes a great deal of dedication and concentration to perform well in this sport, but with enough time and proper training programs, it is possible to develop excellent technique and strength capacity. As with any weight training sport, it takes time and effort to progress and shatter your perceived limitations.
Hypertrophy is the enlargement of muscle achieved by growth in the size of the muscle’s component cells. This is achieved by strength training through programmatic, mechanical loading of muscles in order to activate hypertrophy in the body. Proper execution of hypertrophy training can result in massive muscular weight gains that many bodybuilders and strength athletes pursue in their training. It is achieved by stimulating muscle growth through a very specific method of progressive training and dedicated routines. The primary principal behind hypertrophy is ‘progressive overload’ which emphasizes the progressive increasing of weight loads, number of repetitions, and number of sets in order to encourage muscular growth on a cellular level.
Successful hypertrophy growth requires a great deal of dedication and commitment to an exact and rigorous routine. It can take some time before the massive weight gains are fully realized, but for those with the discipline and determination, hypertrophy strength training can result in massive changes to the body’s physical limits. For those who are able to achieve these limits, there is an overwhelming amount of personal satisfaction and change in physical appearance.
